Community Perspectives on Stadium Development

For my Qualitative Research Methods class I interviewed local residents, business owners, and organization leaders to document their perspectives on the introduction of a Major League Soccer stadium in the neighborhood.

Our goal was provide the local District Council with information about neighborhood trends and stakeholder perspectives on the stadium development, with hopes that this would help the District Council support businesses as the area changes.

Throughout the semester, our class learned and applied guidelines for conducting outreach and interviews.

A highlight of this project was observing a wide diversity of viewpoints emerge as we coded and synthesized our data. Working on this project emphasized to me how important it is to listen closely to the hopes, fears, and experiences of those directly impacted by the issues I research. Qualitative research and reporting allowed us to represent the complexity and nuance of viewpoints that might be obscured in other types of research and analysis.

I learned to use Atlas.ti Qualitative Data Analysis & Research Software in order to code interviews for this project

This project also gave me to an opportunity to engage closely with local stakeholders and to draw attention to their perspectives through public scholarship
